Abadan Institute of Technology

AIT was established in 1939 as a technical institute for the purpose of training Iranian technical staff for employment in the oil industry in Abadan. Specialization was offered in refinery engineering, mechanical engineering , electrical engineering  and petroleum chemistry. Course attendance became full-time for six years and studies commenced with a two-year pre-engineering course designed to give a basic understanding of science, mechanics, mathematics, and more. This was followed by a four-year programme of general engineering. Following several name changes, the institute became the Petroleum University of technology in 1989.

from its inception until the present, AIT has expanded rapidly in size and structure. Beginning with a few students engaged in short review and certificate courses, the institute today serves thousands of students.

The curriculum leads to associate degrees, at the Master's level in various technical fields and PhD programmes in cooperation with local and international institutions.

Within its statutory responsibilities, AIT seeks to provide intellectual and cultural opportunities which will develop habits of scholarship and intellectual curiosity; provide a deep understanding of the nation's requirements, especially in the petroleum industry; enable effective and efficient communication; and prepare productive and responsible specialists. The institute will remain responsive and flexible in order to serve in unique and effective ways.
